You want a haircut. You go to your usual hairdresser. It turns out that your usual stylist isn’t there. He’s been replaced by Philippe and Etienne. Both of them dress in extravagant colors and styles. They have outrageous haircuts in strange colors. They have multiple body piercings.
They welcome you effusively and tell you they’ve scoured the latest fashion magazines to find the right “fashion forward” look for you. It’s something that will turn heads everywhere you go.
Finally, they ask for a special favor. Once they’re finished, could they please take a photo of you with your new haircut? They would like to participate in the Cannes Hairdresser Awards show. If they win, your picture will be everywhere!
How do you feel? All you wanted was a haircut. You don’t know Philippe and Etienne. You didn’t bargain for all of this. You probably feel like running from the salon.
The point? Beware of inflicting the Hairdresser Syndrome on your Client.
The next time you present edgy, award winning work to him, make sure he does not feel like you just did with Philippe and Etienne.
